What do practising psychologists do?
Who is a psychologist?
A psychologist is a specialist who has completed at least a master's degree. During the studies, the knowledge related to human development, thinking, emotions, relationships, communication is accumulated, which helps to understand human nature better. She/he also continuously deepens the knowledge by participating in various training, conferences, congresses, or continuing with doctoral or postgraduate studies to become a psychologist - psychotherapist. The psychologist also follows the principle of confidentiality. During the consultation, she/he seeks to create a supportive, open and accepting relationship that would allow you to feel safe and as a result - open up to discover ways to deal with difficulties.
Why talk in private?
At one or point in life, each of us faces some challenges. These often are related to health issues, work, relationships or financial status and sometimes they might overwhelm. Naturally, tension or stress may quickly arise, accompanied by unpleasant emotions like anger or sadness, and feelings of confusion or frustration. The psychologist looks at the situation from a different angle. The professional will listen, help you discover solutions that are best for you, and improve or develop new skills to pursue positive (desired) change.
How to choose your psychologist?
Many types of psychologists focus on a wide variety of human behaviours. They also differ in their personalities, knowledge and experience. Here are a few things to consider before choosing a psychologist:
1. Acquired education and professional experience
2. Areas in which the psychologist specializes
3. General feeling reading about a professional
Nevertheless, it may happen that you won't find the right one straight away. Sometimes it may be necessary to try several professionals before you find one you are comfortable with. So give yourself time to explore and discover what works best for you.
Consultations explained
What to expect during the first consultation with a psychologist and what to talk about
During the first video session, you may ask the psychologist to provide general information on how the consultation is usually conducted (in terms of the duration, frequency and principle of confidentiality). You can also ask questions related to the professional practice, i.e. what experience psychologist has or what areas she/he specializes in. The first meeting may also focus on the reasons that led you to book an appointment or questions to understand you and your situation better.
Naturally, you may not want to answer specific questions or share your thoughts straight away. You can tell the psychologist that you don't want to answer or talk about it at the moment.
How to prepare for the first consultation
It is normal to be worried before the consultation, especially if it's your first meeting with a professional. Praise yourself for your determination to talk - sharing your inner world with a stranger requires courage. Let's try to prepare for the conversation together, both emotionally and practically.
Emotionally
.Choose a private space where you can feel cosy, safe and comfortable throughout the conversation.
.Take a few minutes before and after the conversation - this will allow you to concentrate and calmly reflect on your experience.
.Consider what you would like to take out of the upcoming conversation; perhaps you may have specific questions you want to be answered.
.This conversation is about you. This means you can decide what you want to talk about.
.You can share your anxiety - she/he will know how to help you feel more comfortable.
Practically
.Check if you have a stable internet connection. In case your WiFi drops and you lose internet connection, be prepared for a backup option, e.g. connect to the internet using a mobile phone.
Make sure your camera, microphone, and headphones are working.
